| | Welcome to Chico Unified School District! We are proud of our outstanding schools, teachers, and staff who serve over 12,000 students from Chico and the surrounding areas.
While California continues to underfund education, the CUSD community continues to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students. As the 2010-2011 school year begins, CUSD can take pride in our many accomplishments.
For the 2010-2011 school year, we will continue to focus on improving student academic achievement through our collaborative professional learning community process. Expanding our community outreach efforts and actively encouraging the establishment of new partnerships with local organizations and businesses will remain another area of concentration. Finally, we are committed to the enhancement of both our internal and external communication as we continue to implement our fiscal recovery plan. I look forward to this school year and invite your participation in our vibrant school community. Please feel free to contact me at (530) 891-3000 x149.

| | Dear Parent/Guardian: Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread in California. Many students have had to miss school because they were sick. To help protect your children and others from whooping cough, a new California law now requires students to be vaccinated against whooping cough. For the 2011-12 school year only, all students entering 7th through 12th grades will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (Tdap) before starting school. Thereafter, in future school years, only students entering 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (Tdap) before starting school. By law, students who do not have proof of receiving a Tdap booster shot will not be able to start school until proof is provided to the school. (The tetanus-diphtheria booster shot, Td, will not meet the requirement.) Please see the flyer posted in the school office for more information about the Tdap vaccine and this immunization requirement. We want to make sure your child starts school on time. I urge you to: 1. Review new requirement as outlined in the flyer. 2. Get your child’s Tdap shot now. A large number of students need a Tdap shot between now and the start of school next year. Make an appointment with your child’s doctor or clinic for your child to get a Tdap booster shot now. Avoid the back-to-school rush. 3. Save your proof of immunization. Be sure to keep the written proof of your child’s Tdap booster shot in a safe place. Your child will need to provide proof of immunization in order to start school. Getting the adolescent whooping cough shot now will not only help protect your child against the ongoing threat of whooping cough but will also meet the new school requirement. If you have any questions, please contact the School Nurse or the Butte County Health Department at 879-3665. Sincerely, David Scott Director – Educational Services | |

| | Measure A was a $48.725 million dollar local school bond that was passed by Chico voters on April 14, 1998. State law mandates that bond funds can be used for construction and renovation projects only. Bond funds cannot be used for school district salaries or operating expenses. A Board Workshop was held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, to present updates on Measure A Phases 1, 2, and 3 projects. Following is an overview of the Measure A Phase 3 projects:
Chico High School New Field House and Lincoln Hall Building Stafford King Weise Architects was selected to proceed with conceptual design regarding the Lincoln Hall/Field House project at ChicoHigh School. The conceptual design phase includes gathering information from the Stakeholder Group on the programming, space requirements and constraints of the site. Representatives from Stafford King Weise Architects made a presentation on their progress thus far. Pleasant Valley High School New Classroom Building Nichols Melburg and Rosetto Architects were selected to proceed with conceptual design regarding the new classroom building at Pleasant Valley High School. The conceptual design phase includes gathering information from the Stakeholder Group on the programming, space requirements and constraints of the site. These are balanced with the budget available for the project to present a series of potential design solutions and inform the District on the scope of the commitment. Once the conceptual design is approved by the Board, the District will enter into the District’s standard agreement with the Architect to provide design and contract administration services. Fair View High School Thomson & Hendricks Architects have been developing a couple of potential projects for the Fair View High School Campus. The first project involves the relocation of six relocatables to the Fair View Campus. Three of the relocatables would come from Chico High School and three would come from Parkview School. The relocatables would be set up on the southwest corner of the campus in a fashion allowing for the housing of AFC or other alternative programs. The classrooms would be supported by the addition of a relocatable restroom. The next project being analyzed is the addition of a shade structure and associated utilities to the northeastern end of the campus. This structure would be utilized by the Construction Academy. The final project being looked at would be the addition of a permanent building which could house these same programs. Leslie Swaim with Thomson and Hendricks discussed these concepts. Inspire School of Arts & Sciences NTD Architecture was selected to work with the District to develop appropriate housing for Inspire School of Arts and Sciences. It was clearly understood that the Board’s priority was to have the new home operational by fall 2011, if possible. The first step in this process was to document the educational program in a way that could help assure that the housing needs of the program would be met. The next step in the process is to develop a plan that puts the required facilities in place in phases. The first phase is proposed to utilize existing buildings on the Chapman campus, with appropriate modifications and relocate/reconfigure relocatable classrooms from the CHS campus. A future phase may add additional support facilities and classrooms utilizing permanent construction. Derek Labrecque and Jordan Knighton with NTD Architecture provided an update on this project.
