Maidu Food Walk

We're getting ready to investigate the Maidu food plants found along the trail. Maidu tribes inhabited this area up to about 1870. Many of the food plants are easily identified and still a viable resource for medicines and research.

Each plant is labelled with the Maidu name and the English equivalent. After listing the names on a map the students hunt for direction markers which lead them to the next plant.

Touch and smell helps everyone to experience the true nature of the area. Each plant community is organized in a manner unique to this transition forest. Chaparral foothill trees and shrubs mingle with upper riparian forest. A wealth of berries and medicinal herbs proliferate in this rich flora.

Completion of the Maidu Food Walk gives everyone a sense of accomplishment and a knowledge of the importance of our natural areas. Young and old alike enjoy the taste sensations found along the trail.
